What We’re Using

Qapital

Why This App is Saving our Savings: We touched on it back in Budgeting From the Edges of Broke, but as a refresh, it’s a savings app to fit any budget that automatically pulls funds from your checking to a savings account using your “rules for saving”.

Favorite Rules: Qapital has practical rules for depositing money into your savings such as, “Save $3 every day” or “Round every purchase up to the nearest $2”, and then they also have these fun rules-
“Drop it like it’s hot! Save when the temperature rises above 75ºF.”
”Save towards a goal whenever Donald Trump tweets.”
”Reward yourself for hitting fitness goals with Apple Health.”

What We’re Trying

Orange Theory Fitness

What Makes This Gym Special: Orange Theory is like having a personal trainer for an entire gym. One of their professional coaches will take you through a 60-minute circuit workout. Each workout is comprised of half cardio, half strengthening. You’ll wear a heart rate monitor and on the board, you’ll see your username with your performance metric and “color” of your effort so you can track your progress as you go. Each colored zone coincides with your individual heart rate. Grey is light activity. Blue is warm up. Green is challenging but doable. Orange is uncomfortable. Red is your all out effort.

The Orange Theory: The science behind the Orange Theory is that working out at an elevated heart rate for an extended period of time will promote the after-burn, or “EPOC”, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. This means that the longer your body stays in the orange zone, the more your body needs to recover oxygen lost during your workout. Your metabolism will then speed up to compensate and leave you burning calories throughout the day, long after your workout is finished. Each class is designed to keep you in the orange zone for at least 12 minutes.

Favorite Circuit: Rowing. It burns your arms like nobody’s business but will leave you feeling oh so accomplished.
