What We’re Watching

Netflix’s Maniac

Why We Binged It: Yes, we watched the entire series in two days. No, we’re not sorry. And Netflix, please stop asking us if we’re “still watching”. We are. Emma Stone and Jonah Hill deliver some of their best work yet in this twisted, unconventional, and 80s-esk sci-fi, dystopian mini series. The show cleverly weaves in and out of different characters, settings, and plot lines, all while sticking to each character’s most basic desire: human connection. Relatable at times, outlandish at others, Maniac is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

On Screen Chemistry: Where else have you seen these two together? Oh, that’s right. Superbad. 2007. It’s all coming back now.

A Telling Quote: “Once you begin to appreciate the structure of the mind, there's no reason anything about us can't be changed.”

What We’re Trying

Sofar Sounds

What It Is: Sofar Sounds is a three act show with no headliner. Described on their website as “an immersive experience that brings guests and artists closer together”, Sofar Sounds shows are small intimate gatherings in everyday spaces that happen all over the world, every single day.

How To Get In On It: Go to their website. Type in your city — cross your fingers that they have yours (they’re in 418 across the world). Choose the date of the show you want to go to. Click “Apply for Tickets” where you’ll then be entered into the lottery. The day of the show, you’ll be notified if you’ve been selected to see the show, you’ll then buy your ticket (between $15-20 in the US), and be given the address to this “secret show”.

Artists That Have Performed a Sofar Show: Billie Eilish. Hozier. Bastille. James Bay. Emeli Sandé. Vanessa Carlton. Jade Bird. Dermot Kennedy. Milky Chance.

What We’re Listening To

Julianna Zachariou

A Little About Her: In one word – dreamy. Southern California based artist Julianna Zachariou is one to watch. Midnight on a Monday at a tiny music venue in Manhattan, the rain falling softly outside, and Zachariou bringing life to a small stage. With all the calming energy and humor of one of the greats and all the humility of an artist just starting out, we’re excited to continue listening. Check her out on Spotify.

Favorite Track: Skin

Best Way to Listen: Sunday morning, coffee in hand, light rain, and a cozy blanket.
