“Make the present moment your friend rather than your enemy. Because many people live habitually as if the present moment were an obstacle that they need to overcome in order to get to the next moment.” ― Dan Harris

What We’re Eating

Hemp Seeds, Maca, and Cacao

No, it’s not illegal: We know that food can fuel your work body What we’ve been experimenting with are foods that help specific function of the body in an attempt to keep our physical and cognitive energy levels stable at work. The latest grouping? Hello, hemp seeds, maca, and cacao.

It’s all in the mix. Research shows that hemp seeds are packed with protein, omega-3 fatty acids and essential vitamins and minerals (read more here). Small studies of maca have found a range of potential health benefits (hint: sexual health) that you can read about here And then there’s cacao (our favorite). A 2017 review pointed to findings of several small studies that suggest that cacao may help slow the progression of type 2 diabetes and reduce insulin resistance. So, how have we brought these three disparate ingredients together to power our bodies during the workday?

What We’re Listening To

The Science of Social Media, Podcast

I’m looking for a new job. Great. Now’s the time to get your professional social profile into shape. Think it doesn’t matter? Think again. “According to a new [2017] national survey conducted online on behalf of CareerBuilder by Harris Poll, 70 percent of employers use social media to screen candidates before hiring. This is up significantly from 60 percent last year and 11 percent in 2006.”

Make each post count. We love The Science of Social Media, a podcast by Buffer. If you don’t know about Buffer, the company describes itself as, “an intuitive social media management platform trusted by brands, businesses, agencies, and individuals to help drive social media results.” Translation: it’s a way for you to make each post count toward building your professional brand. You can always create a finsta account for your alternate ego.

How We’re Budgeting

YNAB.

You need a budget: We know. You know. The software “You Need a Budget (YNAB)” knows. You need one. No use in denying it so you might as well make it easy. You have your job, and now you can give every dollar that comes in a job. The $20 you found on the subway platform? That gets a job. The $500 you made for moving your friend out of their ex wife’s house? That gets a job. YNAB makes sure that every single dollar is accounted for.

Follow their rules: They have four simple rules for budgeting. The first we’ve covered: give every dollar a job. The second? Embrace your true expenses. Set your goals, set your bills, and just pay them with the money you know is there – hello relief. The third rule is a catch all: roll with the punches. Your month doesn’t go as planned? Change your budget. It’s software. It’s computerized. It’s that easy. The fourth rule is all about aging your money. “Work toward spending money today that you’ve earned at least a month ago.” Doesn’t that sound nice? Know what’s coming in and when it’s coming. Yes please. You Need a Budget.
